Ancient Delta: Attractions

 ATTRACTIONS:

18 - Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Golden Mask (FP)

E-Ticket

Must be 40 in.

Go on a perilous adventure through an Egyptian temple as you face the wrath of Akmen III.

BACKSTORY:

In 1937, a group of Ancient Egyptian ruins were discovered in the Sahara. With this, Indiana Jones traveled there, following notes from Abner Ravenwood. According to these notes, this was where a priest named Akmen III was based.

The biggest point of interest was an Ancient Egyptian pyramid. According to legend, this was where Akmen III was buried. According to legend, he had an ancient golden mask. Seen as a great item, many archaeologists were thrilled about this, and so they rushed here to find the mask. Although Indy warned them to be careful, they refused to listen and went into the temple, never to be seen again.

Indy went looking for these lost explorers, but he disappeared too. Hoping to find his friend and the mask, 14-year old Short Round has come to Egypt and has brought in the guests to go to the temple and look for them. However, as they enter the temple, guests may discover just how real some legends are.

QUEUE:

In the furthest corner of the Ancient Delta is an Egyptian pyramid. Here, guests pass through an expedition camp outside, where jeeps, tents, and artifacts are seen. Aside from Egyptian artifacts, guests can also see the Hevitos idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark in one tent, as well as the Blood of Kali goblet from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Soon, guests walk into the pyramid itself, where guests see a newsreel playing on the wall. This explains the backstory of the attraction. There are also boxes from Club Obi Wan, letters to Harold Oxley and Marcus Brody, and a photograph of Marion Ravenwood. Also there is the Ark of the Covenant sitting on a table, with a sign that says Do not open next to it.

Soon, guests go underground and walk through the bowels of the temple. They pass by hieroglyphics telling the story of Akem III and his golden mask. The scenery and the lighting is supposed to make it feel like guests are going deeper underground. As they enter a large room, guests hear a phonogram recording of Short Round, warning them about the perils within. Here is where guests board their jeeps and strap themselves in.

RIDE EXPERIENCE:

Like the Disneyland version of the ride, it begins with the jeeps entering a hall of rewards. Doors switch around randomly, making it look like the jeeps are going into one of the three doors. Here, they see the sarcophagus of Akem III at the end of the hallway. One of three events happen here:

  • The room turns purple and the stars are shown as Akem III offers them immortality.

  • The room turns yellow and reveals statues carrying gold as Akem III offers them great wealth.

  • The room turns blue as water-themed projections dance on the walls, Akem III offering the guests the ability to heal.

However, when they reach the end of the hall, the eyes of the sarcophagus begin to glow. Akem III mocks them for thinking he would give them such rewards and then sends them to the gates of doom.

The vehicles turn left and approach a pair of doors with sinister light coming from it, passing beneath statues of Anubis as they do. Indiana Jones is standing there, trying to keep the gate shut and shouts at the guests:

  • “Get out of here, quick! These gates won’t hold for long!”

  • “Turn out of here now! It’s the only way!”

  • “Why would you take offers from an undead Egyptian priest?”

  • “Shorty must’ve sent you. Get out of here, now!”

  • “I’ll keep the gates shut while you get out of here!”

After that, the vehicles turn left and enter the main room, a large, cavernous area with a pool of water below. A giant Egyptian mask is carved into the wall, which shoots lasers out of its left eye as they pass. The vehicles enter a room of skeletons, some of which are thrust upwards to startle guests. They then proceed into a dark room where the jeep’s lights turn on, revealing walls covered in bugs. A puff of air overhead makes it feel like a bug has just flown over them.

From there, the vehicles attempt to cross a rope bridge, crocodiles snapping their jaws below. They reach the other side and pass into a room with a wall of skulls, some of which spit out mist. Then, they pass by a room filled with snakes, especially a giant cobra that looks menacingly at guests as they go near it. The vehicles then exit the room and teeter on the edge of the cliff before going inside the face of the mask. There, they see the ghostly image of Anubis projected nearby, and then they go under a tree full of scorpions. They pass by a couple of Anubis statues whose axes seem to fall on the guests, but they pass by before they can be harmed. They also pass a room where darts (puffs of air) come out of holes in the walls.

After almost falling into a pit of lava, the vehicles move away before going down a dark hallway. There, they see Indy standing nearby, asking them to turn on the lights. However, when this happens, guests see a large boulder rolling towards them. As the vehicle seemingly backs away, they go through the floor and under the boulder. On the other side, they see Indy standing next to the crushed boulder, looking at the guests and commenting on their experience:

  • “Tourists, why did it have to be tourists?”

  • “Next time, you’re on your own.”

  • “Not bad for tourists…..”

  • “Hey, it could’ve been much worse.”

  • “You got lucky this time.”

POST-RIDE:

After returning to the loading area, guests get off the jeep and take a hidden passageway back to the Egyptian desert. There, they walk towards the Adventure Outpost gift shop, where they can see photos taken of them on the ride as well as merchandise.

19 - The Dig Site

C-Ticket

Any Height

In the middle of the Egyptian desert is a place where guests can dig through sand to find Ancient Egyptian relics. It’s like the boneyard in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but with artifacts instead of fossils.

20 - Wrath of Horus (FP)

E-Ticket

Must be 48 in.

Hang on tight as you rush to survive on this heart-pounding roller coaster ride.

BACKSTORY:

When explorers first came to Egypt to investigate these mysterious ruins, among them was Sallah, the greatest digger in Egypt and a friend of Indiana Jones. When they got there, Sallah took a particular interest in a temple dedicated to Horus, the Egyptian sky god.

However, as Sallah and his friends excavated the ruins, strange things began to happen. Archaeologists vanished without a trace, peculiar noises were heard, and mine carts built around the monument began to move on their own.

Determined to discover what happened to the missing expedition members, Sallah has hired the guests to come and investigate. However, they are soon about to discover the supernatural forces within the ruins.

QUEUE:

Guests approach the ruins by moving through the nearby archaeological site. Here, white tents have been set up near the temple. Guests pass through several of the tents, where several written notes explain the backstory of the ride.

Soon, guests enter the ruins themselves. They climb up the stairs and enter the loading area. Here, they climb on their mine carts, which fit up to six people each. They pull down their lap bars and wait for their adventure to begin.

RIDE EXPERIENCE:

It begins by going up a hill, where guests climb to the top of the ruins. As they pass a statue of Horus, some strange whispering noises are heard. Suddenly, the cars turn right and then fall down and then move back up. The track goes down again, moving through the ruins at a quick speed. From there, they move up and down before going around a group of sphinxes. They also go through a loop in the middle of the ruins, going faster and faster until they are suddenly plunged underground, the whispers growing even louder. Then, just when they think they’re doomed, guests are pulled back above ground and towards the loading area again. From there, they get off the vehicle and take a passage back into the desert.
